Description
Summary:013-0017-001 J. NEGRIN 18th November, 1942. Dear Sir Walter Perhaps you have seen the information published in the press about the handing over to the Spanish authorities of Sr. Largo Caballero, former Prime Minister of the Spanish Republic, and several other prominent Spanish republicans who have been in unoccupied France since the end of the Spanish war. I do not need to stress our anxiety, particularly in view of the terrible precedents of President Companys and the former Minister of interior, Sr. Zugazagoitia, who were handed over by the Germans to the Spanish authorities in June 1940 and executed a few weeks later. I feel morally bound to do everything in my power to protect these compatriots and former colleagues, whose only crime has been that of defending the freedom and the independence of our country. And that is why I take the liberty of addressing to you this letter in the hope that you will find it possible to help them. I am sure you will agree with me that these people do not deserve to be abandoned in their present mortal danger. Yours sincerely J. Negrin Sir Walter Citrine, C.K., Transport House, 292/946/13/17
