Foreign Office, S.W.1. 1st December, 1941. (c 12970/275/41). My dear Citrine, I have now looked into the questions raised in your letter WMC/WJB/DT/316 of the 14th November on the subject of the position of Largo Caballero, the late Prime Minister of Spain, who is now a refugee in France. There is at present no reason to credit the report that the Vichy authorities intend to agree to the extradition of Largo Caballero to Spain. But I am sending instructions authorising His Majesty's Ambassador at Madrid in the event of extradition taking place, to represent to the Spanish authorities the serious effect that the execution of this Spaniard would have on opinion in this country, provided he considers that his intervention would have a favourable influence upon the attitude of the Spanish Government.
