My dear Bevin, A Spanish friend of mine, Wenceslao Carrillo, who is now in London, draws my attention to a report in the press to the effect that Francisco Largo Caballero has been handed over to Franco by the Pétain Government, and is now awaiting trial in Madrid. He also expresses the fear that the same fate may have overtaken our old friends Trifón Gómez and Carlos Hernández, and also Pascual Tomás and Enrique de Francisco. He tells me he has written to Citrine, asking him to try and influence the British Government to approach the Franco Government on their behalf; and he asks me to back up his efforts. Citrine is, of course, away, and I am wondering whether you are in a position to do something about the matter; though I fear that the British Government's influence with Franco at the present is probably not very great. About Gómez, Hernandez and the other two it would probably be better to do nothing for the time being, as there is no positive information that they are in Franco's hands, and there is possibly a danger in drawing his attention to the fact that they are in France, which might do more harm than good. I hope, however, that it may be possible for you to bring a little influence to bear on Largo Caballero's behalf.
