[LABOUR] WOMAN November, 1936 The response to our appeal for knitted garments for the Spanish workers has been ready and generous so far. Will Sections please note, however, that we cannot for various reasons take old clothes. We badly want knitted garments for the men — sweaters and pullovers with or without sleeves, socks, and mittens without fingers. These garments could be made of thick "quicknit" wool. Then we shall be glad to have all kinds of knitted children's garments. Those who cannot knit might send wool — or cash. We shall also be glad to have the names of any women who are willing to knit. I have had several queries as to the exact kind of garment which is needed. Socks do not present much difficulty; for mittens, there is a good pattern of mittens (13N) in "Woolcraft" (6d. Patons and Baldwins Ltd.); for sweaters and pullovers the following leaflets in the Golden Eagle Series Knitting Wools (2d. each) are suggested: Nos. 13. 156 and 174; and also Patons and Baldwins' "Helps to Knitters" No. 2693 (2d.) and Jaeger Hand-Knit Woollies for Men (6d.) page 12. Immediately the Fascist revolt in Spain was announced, the National Council of Labour issued an appeal for the International Solidarity Fund on behalf of the Spanish workers. Many Women's Sections responded generously to this appeal. Our appeal for knitted garments is meant to supplement the more general appeal to the Movement by getting the women to undertake the special job of securing the provision of garments which are so desperately needed now that the cold days are on us. Under the auspices of the Standing Joint Committee of Industrial Women's Organisations a special Committee has been set up to supervise and direct this task so as to secure the greatest possible measure of assistance as speedily as possible. The women in other countries where the International Solidarity Fund is working, are also being urged to concentrate on the making of garments. Our sisters in Belgium have already launched on a number of activities to provide clothing for Spain. There, work parties are being organised in the Socialist women's groups, and one original idea they have taken up is to make their members pay to come to special events not in money, but in kind, and by this means a considerable quantity of garments and material has already been collected.
