Dear Sirs, We have to-day received a communication from Messrs Rafferty & Watson (Export) Ld, Hull, the loading brokers of the s.s. BACKWORTH. We are informed that in the first place it was anticipated that the goods we have sent forward would be stowed in the 'Tween Deck' (the spare bunker space). We are advised, however, that the Captain finds it necessary to fill both his permanent and spare bunker spaces, and has therefore elected to ship the goods on the top of the coal in the Afterhold. The Coal is washed, and therefore of a damp nature, and it is imperative that our consignment should not come into contact with the coal. The loading brokers inform us that they have been compelled to undertake the levelling and matting of the coal, and then arrange separation by timber dunnage, which work they anticipate will cost about £35. We will be debited with this amount, and, in turn, will look to you for reimbursement. Possibly, however, in view of the fact that the Basque Government (the Time-Charterers of the vessel) are clearing all freight expenses, they will also accept liability for this present charge, and perhaps you in turn can pass on this charge. Meanwhile, we are informed that the s.s. BACKWORTH will probably be leaving Immingham for Bilbao to-morrow. Yours faithfully J. Thompson Export Department.
