I have been in consultation with my colleagues of the National Council of Labour about making a further grant from the International Solidarity Fund, in order to make good the ambulance that has been destroyed, and to supply the necessary lorries and car now required for Spain. I am very glad to say that they agree to send to you a sum of £1200 (twelve hundred pounds), which I am given to understand will cover the total outlay. Cheque is enclosed herewith for this amount. I am somewhat disappointed to learn it is considered impracticable to mark the ambulances in any way so that they could be identified with the British Labour Movement. I had not of course in mind anything of an obtrusive character, but in fairness to those who have subscribed to our funds I thought that some arrangement should be made to make apparent the support we were giving to the Spanish workers. For them also it would, I think, have a good psychological effect. We shall be giving a note to the press, indicating that we are giving these ambulances, etc. We think that the news should be published on New Year's Day. Do you think this is the right time for it psychologically? If you have any view on that point, will you kindly telegraph to us? If we do not receive any word from you tomorrow we shall go ahead, so that the story will appear on New Year's Day. We also leave it to your discretion as to the publication of the news in the press at your end. In conclusion, we should be very pleased to receive from you from time to time information concerning the work of the unit.
