Dear Sir Walter, On receipt of your letter of 13th inst., I telegraphed you as follows:- "Thousand thanks for thousand pounds. Boyd and MacMahon have got permission leave Spain. If asked Mr. Eden suggest General Franco's allowing them return to Front with Ambulance to succour wounded". I cannot express adequately the relief with which we received the generous grant of your Council of £1,000 from the International Fund. So far, the maximum from any single donor or organisation was £100. A friend had promised to give pound for pound up to £1,000 against the maximum donation received. So far it had been £100, but your Council's splendid generosity enables us to claim £1,000 so that we are in reality indebted to you for £2,000. I enclose formal receipt and would feel obliged by your conveying this good news to your Council at its next meeting. Yours sincerely, D.M.
