Description
Summary:015b_0044_001 LP DURRANT'S PRESS CUTTINGS St. Andrew's House, 32 to 34 Holborn Viaduct, 13 St. Andrew Street, Holborn Circus, E.C.1. Telephone CENTRAL 3149 (TWO LINES) Daily Worker Nelson Place, Cayton Street, London E.C.1. Cutting from issue dated 21 NOV 1936 Let Labour Act! —United Appeal for Spain The following appeal by leading members of the Socialist League, Communist Party and I.L.P., was sent yesterday to the National Council of Labour: — DEAR COMRADES, - THE WHOLE CIVILISED WORLD HAS BEEN SHOCKED BEYOND MEASURE AT THE FASCIST AIR OFFENCE AIMED AT THE PHYSICAL DESTRUCTION OF THE PEOPLE OF MADRID. "No parallel," says the correspondent of the London "Times," "can be found in the 1914-18 war for the ordeal Madrid is experiencing. At any moment people of all ages going their way and children playing may be confronted with tragedy. There may be a crash of glass and one looks up in time to see a mangled body blown out of a window, with a cloud of dust and plaster." HOW LONG IS THE BRITISH LABOUR MOVEMENT GOING TO STAND ASIDE WITHOUT ATTEMPTING TO MOBILISE THE MASS OF THE BRITISH PEOPLE TO ACTIVE STRUGGLE AGAINST THE PRESENT ARMS BLOCKADE AND FOR SENDING OF ARMS TO THE SPANISH PEOPLE? The heroic resistance of Madrid and the failure of Franco to conquer that city have forced the Fascist Governments to come out in the open and recognise their Fascist allies in Spain. This will be followed by a vast increase in the arms supplied to the rebels and most probably by the use of poison gas. The rebels, encouraged by Hitler and Mussolini are engaging in acts of piracy against Soviet ships. The war of aggression of the Fascist Powers against peace and democracy and Socialism in Europe is being intensified. Almost a month has passed since the Labour movement officially abandoned its support of the non-intervention policy, and yet no campaign of any kind has been launched to force the Government to lift the arms blockade At the moment, when the agony of Madrid has roused the rank and file to fever heat, when the French Socialist, Communist and trade union movements are making renewed efforts to force their Government to lift the blockade, the official British Labour Movement remains passive. We appeal to the National Council of Labour, in this grave situation, to launch a great campaign for the lifting of the arms blockade and for allowing arms to be exported to the Spanish Government. WE ASK THE NATIONAL COUNCIL AT ONCE TO ORGANISE GREAT DEMONSTRATIONS IN THE LEADING TOWNS OF GREAT BRITAIN, TO CALL UPON THE TRADE UNION MOVEMENT TO MOBILISE ITS WHOLE STRENGTH FOR MEETINGS AT THE FACTORIES, ON THE RAILWAYS, AND THE DOCKS. We believe that the rank and file of the Labour movement is only awaiting a call to organised activity, and we ask the National Council of Labour to organise this great campaign and we pledge ourselves to give the maximum assistance in any activity that is undertaken - Yours fraternally, (Signed) STAFFORD CRIPPS FENNER BROCKWAY WILLIE GALLACHER JAMES MAXTON WILLIAM MELLOR HARRY POLLITT 292/946/15b/44(i)
