"The Beauty Exchange" looks at how the media (in particular, commercials and the so-called glossy women's magazines such as Cosmopolitan or Harper's Bazaar) make contemporary Czech women conscious of their appearance, and the ways in which they shape today's stereotypes of feminine beauty. It focuses on four women: a trendy 20-something who buys all the latest beauty products; an overweight woman who will try anything to lose the extra kilos; a 15-year-old who enters a competition to be a model and eventually succeeds; a mother who undergoes plastic surgery. The latter, Eva, says she can work on other parts of her body, but once her breasts sag there's nothing she can do about it. Except have plastic surgery, which she hopes will mean a complete turn-around in her life and self-esteem. Well, things do not quite work out the way she hoped: the operation requires further surgical treatment and Eva still cannot wear her favorite clothes which are now too tight at the top. The operation is shown at length and in detail, which some viewers may find difficult to watch. |
