November 1942. The battle for Stalingrad is at its height. 100 kilometers north of the city in the tiny village of Shishka that sits on top of a hill in the middle of the vast steppe life continues uninterrupted. The war, however, has reached into this pastoral idyll through the distant echo of the canonade, the roar of airplane engines and of explosions. At the center of the plot set in Shishka is the eternal triangle. Two boys, Vania and Igor, are competing for the heart of the local beauty Kalia. Naturally, Kalia fancies the handsome and well-read Igor who came from the city over the local Vania. Vania is jealous and confides his sorrows to his closest friends - the bulls that he looks after as a herder. |
