Summary:On 1 May 1960 an American spy plane entered Soviet airspace, and Soviet pilots were ordered to eliminate it at any price. The plane was shot down, the pilot ejected and was captured. Two Soviet planes remained in the area and one of them, with pilot Sergei Safronov, was brought down by Soviet anti-aircraft fire. The accident further escalated the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the US.
