The Campaign to Register Solidarity Chapters: Background / by Maria ZagórskaThe campaign to register Solidarity chapters in work places began 18 months ago. Although the chapters' founding committees have meticulously kept within the bounds of current labor law, their applications for registration have been rejected by the courts. The committees believe that it is only by acting overtly, which means legally, that they can effectively represent the workers' interests. The Campaign to Register Solidarity Chapters: Recent Developments / by Maria ZagórskaThe campaign to register Solidarity chapters has gathered momentum, even though the authorities have continued to reject applications for registration and have been punishing those involved. Despite their failure to win registration, the chapters' founding committees have helped to revive activism among workers and to draw attention to the authorities' violation of international agreements that it has ratified. The Cigarette and Smoking Scandal / by Anna PomianThe Polish independent press has recently commented on the smoking habits of Poles and has contended that the health hazard is compounded by the poor quality of Polish cigarettes.
