Description
Summary:The series contains materials from news agency releases, clippings, biographies, RFE/RL reports, abstracts of media reports both from the former Soviet Union and West European countries, newspaper and magazine articles, or privately collected information (in the form of letters). Hand-written biographical information is usually on the back side of postcards or coloured index cards. Most of the documents date from 1980 to 1992, however earlier materials dating back to 1940s can be also found. Each file contains the name(s) of the first and last persons, the records about which are in the file. The files with extensive records about one person contain also dates (year and month); in this case the material is arranged chronologically. Persons monitored were prominent Soviet government and Communist party officials, politicians and scientists who belonged to the Soviet elite. Particularly numerous are the cards on A. Yakovlev, V. Zagladin, A. Andropov, M. Gorbachev, L. Brezhnev, and K. Chernenko. Accruals not expected
