Groups of families were studied whose incomes fell into five groups, differing from each other by ten shillings. A family cannot spend what it likes or requires on food until the various family overhead standing charges have been met. In the case of the poorer sections of the community, these overheads are down to an irreducible minimum and it is quite impossible to economise further in them. The following table shows the percentages of income in each group spent on overheads: Group Income Percentage of income spent on Rent, Fuel and Light, Insurances, Clothing, etc. 1 25/ — 35/- 55.19% 2 35/ — 45/- 56.39% 3 45/ — 55/- 53.94% 4 55/ — 65/- 56.23% 5 70/- plus 55.15% The balance of income is, theoretically, available for the purchase of food.
